From December 26th to December 30th, about 40 children from the Mid-Western Diocese gathered together in the Nativity of the Mother of God Serbian Orthodox Monastery, in New Carlisle, IN, for the second annual Winter Youth Retreat. The retreat consisted off outside activities in the snow including Winter Olympics, volleyball, tennis, etc. The participants had several lectures that answered the following questions: Who is God? Who is Man? Who is Jesus Christ? What is the Gospel?. The lectures were done by several priests and deacons. Various monastic services were attended so that the participants could truly get a taste of what monastic life is. The participants also learned to paint eggs Russian style meaning that pure bees wax was used to paint the eggs. The participants also participated in poetry night. Everyone either read a poem or favorite quotation or sang their favorite song. It was wonderful to sit by the fire roasting marshmallows and just enjoying our time with each other. During the retreat there were many contemplations meaning that the priests visited each house and answered any questions about anything that the youth had. On Saturday evening, many of the participants attended their first vigil which was a three and a half hour long service. On Sunday, everyone took communion during Divine Liturgy. Before Liturgy, Fr. Dragan presented the Abbess Makrina with a pearl cross from Jerusalem. It was a thank you to her and her sisters for opening their doors in order for the retreat to be held there. After Liturgy the abbess was tied as is tradition for Materice or Serbian Mother’s Day. She gave everyone a little gift and afterwards everyone enjoyed their final lunch together. Each of the participants wrote a letter for kids in Kosovo which will be sent along with the money that is raised from the auctioning off of the eggs that were painted. Afterwards, the monastery was cleaned up, and everyone said their farewells. It was a beautiful five days in which everyone made new friends, and during which everyone opened up to what God has given them. Glory be to God for letting us gather together to enjoy five beautiful, blessed days in which each of us learned something new and became someone new.
